Recently we had a couple of floors to do in Gayndah, Queensland. One in particular was a bit of a challenge. This particular one had a mix of Hoop Pine boards and Hardwood, rooms added here and there, and generally it was a challenging job on this 100+ year old timber home.

One thing that is quite commonly found in these older homes is about a quintillion nails in the flooring through repairs to squeaky floor boards over the years, so there were sore knees all round from punching them all down. But the results speak for themselves.

Three coats of High Gloss Poly Urethane was used on this floor, really bringing the home to life.

TIP: See that shadow to the right of the bathtub? That is caused by water getting through the old finish (previously an acrylic) so it pays to ensure that you maintain your timber floors through proper, but minimal, regular maintenance. (See our ‘Looking After Your New Floor‘ article.)

Wide Bay Floorsanding regularly travel from Hervey Bay

to most parts of South East Queensland to restore timber floors, and even install new ones.

Please feel free to download the following guides to help you maintain your newly coated floor.

Following are some tips to help you maintain the quality of timber floors:

Wait, at least, for 24 hours after having water based coatings applied, 48+ hours for solvent based coatings, to use the room with light traffic. If possible, walk in bare feet leaving your shoes off immediately before walking on the floor to avoid scratching. Coatings are generally fully cured between 3-7 days. The longer the better is the best rule, particularly before placing heavy furniture on the floor.

Place felt pads underneath all furniture contact points to help prevent damage to the floor’s surface.

Sand and Dirt is a timber floor’s worst enemy. Place a short pile mat inside the entry to a room and a deep pile mat at the entrance to your property. Ensure these mats are shaken weekly.

Do not vacuum or use bristle brooms, use an electrostatic dust mop, such as a ‘Oates bulldozer’. Mop occasionally with cold or lukewarm water using Squeaky Clean or a small amount of white vinegar. Refer to Squeaky Clean label for further details.

Wipe up spills as soon as possible with soft cloths or paper towels.
